The earliest mechanical slot machine was assembled in 1895 and was dubbed the "Liberty Bell." Prior to this invention, the term "slot machines" was employed to characterize various types of vending machines.

The first real widespread use of one armed bandits in American betting houses is credited to the Flamingo Hotel, Vegas in and around the 40’s. The head of the betting house had originally thought the machines would be awesome to intrigue tired wives of a few of the biggest high roller customers of the betting house. He didn’t know that slot games would be a fun activity for nearly everyone and that the enticement would go further than the apathetic wives. At this time, it is said, slot machines make up over two-thirds of all money brought in by American brick and mortar casinos.
