Slot games are one of the most popular games to bet on at casinos. On any given night, expect most of the machines to be packed with eager players. They appear in a good selection of betting levels; a few only cost five cents a spin while others can cost as much as twenty dollars a spin. Although slots are a gambling tool, a number of individuals are intimidated by the high-dollar table games and like the delight and excitement of a great slot machine.

The earliest mechanical slot machine was assembled in 1895 and was dubbed the "Liberty Bell." Created by a California auto mechanic, the earliest slot machines had 3 spinning reels with diamonds, hearts, spades and a cracked Liberty Bell painted on each. Prior to this invention, the term "slot machines" was employed to characterize various types of vending machines.

The first real widespread use of one armed bandits in American betting houses is credited to the Flamingo Hotel, Vegas in and around the 40’s. The head of the betting house had originally thought the machines would be awesome to intrigue tired wives of a few of the biggest high roller customers of the betting house. He didn’t know that slot games would be a fun activity for nearly everyone and that the enticement would go further than the apathetic wives. At this time, it is said, slot machines make up over two-thirds of all money brought in by American brick and mortar casinos.

Slot machine games beyond a doubt have a full history. From the little invention of the mid-19th century to the billion dollar industry of today, the slots will continue to grow in universal appeal.

Slot Machine positioning

Volumes have been written on this issue, and the disquiet and discord about where the "hot" video slots are located in a casino are still ongoing – sixty years after one armed bandits were 1st placed in gambling dens.

The traditional rule is that the very best slots were placed just inside the main entrance of the casino; so that folks walking by would see real jackpot winners … be influenced to come unto the gambling floor and play. Our attitude is that this is definitely no longer true.

The majority of the mega casinos these days are behemothic complexes … it is not possible to see inside from the sidewalk, so there is no longer a reason to place the ‘loose’ slots near any of the doors.

An additional traditional rule is that loose slot machine games are positioned on the major aisles in the casinos, again so that more folks could see winning jackpots and be motivated to play. Notably though, we find that this also is not a universal rule any more.

What casinos found over the years is that people walking down the busy aisles were frequently on the way to somewhere else. If they played one armed bandits at all, they would simply put in their loose change because they happened to be walking by. Win or lose, they would very often not stop to keep playing. And the very last thing a casino wants is for someone to win a jackpot by playing only a few coins and then not stay to put it all back in!

These days, casinos are constantly changing their perspective about where to place the loose slot machines.
